Drafting Board

Principally, a Drawing Board is a ‘work station’ for any graphic designers to work from. They are devised to slant forward at an angle that is suitably comfortable for the person working on it. Being a sturdy table helps to support any undue pressure applied to it. Attached to this Drafting Board would be a “parallel rule” which can extend the distance across the board. Another added feature is a narrow piece of steel that will hold all the necessary drafting pencils. For convenience, trays are attached for other essential equipment needed close at hand. After all this is a ‘work station’.

Also known as a drawing table or an Architects table, in particular, a Drafting Board can be utilized for any form of technical drawing which requires the large sheets of graphic paper with which to work.

Benefits of a Drafting Board

Comfort and ease of operation takes precedence in order to produce quality layouts, which this will give anyone needing to be active at. As they are fully adjustable to any preferred position, it therefore alleviates straining any part of the body, especially the lower back area.

A Drafting Board is very beneficial to any drafting or designing project. Portable boards are available which can be transported to those onsite areas to conduct business. Due to their durability, they are fairly heavy to maneuver, unlike the portable type which is noticeably lighter in weight yet also very stable to be able to function at.

The “parallel rule” is completely manageable with the “up and down” slide. Protractors and scales are built in for convenience contributing to exactness and precise dimensions.

In some instances electric motors are incorporated in the Drafting Board to raise or lower the angle of the surface. Notwithstanding the occurrence of “computer aided drafting” there are still some designers, architects, and structural engineers who prefer working according to traditional methods, with paper, pencil and a Drafting Board.

Projects done this way cannot easily be replicated and influenced in the way electronic records are capable of. Therefore, the Drafting Board allows for inventive designs some level of official document security.

The origin of the Drafting Board dates back to the 18 th and 19 th century when it had multiple duties. With seemingly a very complex configuration, by means of simple mechanisms to raise and slant the actual working surface. They were ultra large and cumbersome, and occupied spaces in printing rooms for editing purposes, as well as in libraries to accommodate those very big reference books
